Neighborhood Centers Summer 2012 Newsletter
We have had a very busy Summer here at Neighborhood Centers. Visits to the White House, Back to School Community Health Fairs, and the grand opening of the Ripley House Middle School and community celebration just to name a few. Check out our highlights below!

Neighborhood Centers Goes to Nation's Capital
Neighborhood Centers accepted an invitation to travel to Washington D.C. to join a panel for the White House Forum on Urban Innovation on August 27th. Angela Blanchard joined leaders from across the nation to speak on the successes of our movement to transform communities. For Good.

Ripley House welcomes community to celebrate new middle school
We cut the ribbon on the Ripley House Middle School on August 23rd, inviting the entire community to celebrate this occasion, complete with live music, traditional dancing, and the unveiling of a beautiful mosaic created by our seniors at the direction of local artist Jesse Sifuentes. Parents met teachers, administrators met the community, and students led guided tours of their new school.

Understanding Deferred Action
Neighborhood Centers sprinted into action upon hearing the recent Deferred Action announcement by the Obama Administration, hosting several DREAMer Information Summits at three of our neighborhood centers around Houston. Around 1,600 people attended one of our summits, where families learned about how Deferred Action impacts our communities.

Young Neighbors help us by sharing their talent and passion to make Houston a place of opportunity for all. Young Neighbors is a cause-related membership group for volunteering and networking. Members also agree that participation provides new and interesting perspectives about the cultural and civic attributes of our great city through hands on experiences. Want to get involved? Chevron outfits students with uniforms for the new school year
Chevron's Khakis and Collars is one of our favorite "Back To School" events. For the 10th consecutive year, more than 100 volunteers from Chevron distributed school uniforms at four of our neighborhood centers. This year, 2,429 school uniforms were distributed.

Partners put Health in focus at five Health Fairs
Walmart and ARAMARK have continuously helped us build healthy communities For Good. Immunizations, Health Screenings, and tasty Healthy Cooking Demonstrations helped families start the school year in optimal health.

Registration opens for 20th Annual TXU Energy Turkey Trot
Celebrate 20 years of Thanksgiving tradition at the 2012 TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services! The race will continue to take place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.
