Neighborhood Centers gets ready for the City of Houston 3rd Annual Citizenship Week "Celebrating the Many Faces of Houston"
Houston’s a great city because of its people. They are as unique as they are driven, and whether they’re natives or new neighbors, their diversity, accomplishments, and stories of triumph are the cause for celebration. The City of Houston Third Annual Citizenship Week rallies around the theme of what it means to be a citizen of our great city and honors people like José Angel Razo, a young boy who came to Houston and discovered opportunities that made America his new home.
As a 6-year-old boy living in his native Mexico, innocence had a harsh way of slipping away from Jose’s young life. His family was struggling to make ends meet, and Jose had to make the cruel choice between getting an education or, going to work to put food on the table. With only a first-grade education under his belt, José had no choice but to quit school and find a job at a nearby farm. But, his dreams were too big to suppress, and his determination too strong. Little did he know he would soon find what he was seeking in Houston. Read José’s complete story >
