Neighborhood Centers Inc. honored George and Laura Pontikes at the 14th Annual "Heart of Gold Celebration" luncheon on Thursday, February 24, with the Alice Graham Baker Crusader Award for long-term community service. George A. Pontikes, Jr. is the president and CEO of Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, Inc., where Laura Pontikes serves as CFO and Executive Vice President.
Also recognized at a VIP reception before the 'Heart of Gold' luncheon were U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn for their continuing support of SSBG (Social Service Block Grant) funds for victims of Hurricane Ike. Other notables included City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker; Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia; Houston City Council Members Wanda Adams, Sue Lovell, Brenda Stardig, Oliver Pennington and Jolanda Jones; Harris County Judge Ed Emmett; Host Committee Co-Chairs Bill and Melissa King; and Neighborhood Centers Inc. President and CEO Angela Blanchard.
Students from the Neighborhood Centers Promise Community School – Ripley House Campus performed in the ballroom with Urban Souls Dance Company. The event also debuted the documentary "I am Houston" to highlight how Houston – one of the world’s most international cities – helps its residents achieve their ambitions.
The event raised more than $500,000 to support the education and community initiatives coordinated through 60 Neighborhood Centers’ facilities throughout the region.
