Chevron Preps Houston Students

With the start of a new school year fast approaching, Neighborhood Centers and Chevron gear up once again for the annual Khakis and Collars school supply and uniform event in August.

Sponsored by Chevron for eight consecutive years, Khakis and Collars provides school uniforms for low-income families, and has become a highly anticipated event for many. At last year’s event 100 Chevron employee volunteers distributed uniforms, school supplies, and books to more than 1,500 children. That number is expected to grow this year.

Chevron is a significant supporter of Neighborhood Centers’ programs. In addition to being the underwriting sponsor for Khakis and Collars, Chevron recently donated and installed a playground for the new Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center slated to open in September. Chevron volunteers have also donated their time to Neighborhood Centers’ programs including Stay Connected disaster recovery services, Immigration & Citizenship forums, and community events such as Culture Fest.

"It’s the best of both worlds," says Chevron Public and Government Affairs Manager Joni Baird, alluding to the award-winning partnership (last year Chevron and Neighborhood Centers received a joint Leadership in Action Award from Leadership Houston for the Khakis and Collars program). "Neighborhood Centers has excellent leadership, tremendous programs, and really knows how to make positive change in the community. When Chevron employees volunteer at Neighborhood Centers, they are fulfilled and know that they’ve made a difference in the community."

In 2009 alone, Chevron employees contributed more than 25,000 volunteer hours and the corporation invested more than $5.4 million in the greater Houston region. Through the "Humankind" program, which matches employee contributions dollar-for-dollar, Chevron has donated more than $3 million to more than 3,200 Houston nonprofits.

"Chevron is an exemplary partner to local nonprofits," says Emelda Douglas, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Neighborhood Centers. "Chevron’s passion shows through its devotion to the community and its efforts to help Neighborhood Centers programs. The employee volunteers are always enthusiastic about their assignments, and they translate that enthusiasm into positive engagement in the community."

Khakis and Collars will take place Saturday, August 7 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the following locations:

Cleveland-Ripley Neighborhood Center, Pasadena – 720 Fairmont Parkway
