Seniors Share Their Visions of Success and Build Community
More than 100 seniors shared their visions, dreams, and goals for their Fifth-Ward community at the Sharing Success, Building Community Forum in June held at the JW Peavy Senior Center. The event was the first in a series of three appreciative inquiry forums to be held for seniors throughout the city. The forums empower older adults to illustrate their visions of ideal communities for seniors, and lay the groundwork to make their vision a reality.
Center of Aging and Community at Indiana Institute Director Philip B. Stafford made an interesting observation about the forum in his blog Phil’s Adventures in Elderburbia. "Though produced as a vision for the future, the group was merely wanting to get [the neighborhood] back to the way it once was…so it’s not a vision. It’s a memory," he said. "Children have dreams. Elders have memories. How interesting that they produce a common image. How powerful it would be to mobilize the energy of children’s dreams and the wisdom of elders’ memory to transform our communities ‘back to the future.’"
Seniors in the Sunnyside and East End communities will have an opportunity to share their dreams at upcoming forums in their neighborhood at the following locations:
Friday, July 23 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. South Union Church of Christ 7427 Ardmore
Wednesday, August 11 1 – 4 p.m. Ripley House Neighborhood Center 4410 Navigation
Call 713-669-5355 to register.
