Promise Neighborhood

A 3.7 square mile in southwest Houston known as Gulfton, once considered a "problem" neighborhood, is now recognized as a Promise Neighborhood by the U.S. Department of Education.

As part of its Neighborhood Revitalization strategy, the Department of Education has awarded a $500,000 Promise Neighborhood planning grant to Neighborhood Centers Inc. and its 12 partners.

Along with community residents, the partners will develop a plan for the creation of a strong pipeline of education—from "birth through college to career"—for all children living in the neighborhood.

A Promise Neighborhood is one in which the education of children is a priority for the whole community. This means that all systems serving the neighborhood—including businesses, health care, human services and others—must be focused on the goal of positive educational achievements for its children and families.

We invite you to visit Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center to learn more about the Gulfton Promise Neighborhood, and to offer your input and support to our plan.
