2009 Accomplishments

Accomplishments by the Numbers.
 
In 2009 over 264,000 individuals received service from one or more of Neighborhood Centers' program areas. Here are some highlights from our accomplishments.
 
 
Family Financial Services
  • 228 persons enrolled in Financial Literacy courses
  • 27 people participated in the Savings Match Program
  • 25 Financial Literacy Workshops were attended by 25 people on average
  • The NCI Community Development Credit Union opened 689 accounts
  • At least 31 unbanked center members opened accounts
  • 17 local vendors sold crafts and food at 3 Culture Fest events.  The events were attended on average by 530 people
  • 44 people received almost 500 hours of business development mentoring
  • 179 ITIN applications were submitted through our Tax Centers (76 have already been approved)
  • 18,392 tax returns were completed returning $25,380,676 to Houston households
  • 871 persons enrolled in ESL courses
  • 738 persons enrolled in Computer Literacy courses
 
 
 
Immigration & Citizenship
  • 11 Immigration Forums were held throughout Houston, with 3,275 total attendance
  • The forums facilitated the completion of 766 citizenship applications and 786 free legal consultations
  • 490 individuals were trained to assist with applications at the forums
  • 144 persons received individual immigration consultations and services
  • 219 persons enrolled in Citizenship courses
  • 17 naturalization interview preparatory sessions were held
  • 37 known individuals obtained Citizenship as a result of our forums and Citizenship courses
  • Community centers hosted 4 cultural events which were attended on average by 176 people

Family Health & Wellness
  • 9 sponsored Health Fairs which were attended by a total of 12,208 individuals
  • 1,683 free immunizations were given at the Health Fairs
  • 4,231 free health screenings were give at the Fairs and other events
  • 36 Health Lectures were given by medical personnel
  • 222 persons enrolled in Healthy Cooking/Nutrition courses
  • 1,497 persons enrolled in Fitness courses
  • 963 persons enrolled in Hobby/Leisure courses
  • 35 people contributed 150 hours to community gardens at our centers
  • 152 persons enrolled in Parenting courses
 
 

Leadership & Community Engagement
  • 36 individuals participated in Lideres Sembrando Futuro (Leaders Cultivating the Future)
  • LSF participants created and implemented 9 community improvement projects
  • Center Advisory Boards boast 77 total members; average monthly meeting attendance is 75%
  • 11 Advisory Board members were new in 2009
  • Quarterly membership meetings at the centers were attended on average by 134 individuals
  • 110 individuals participated in Neighborhood Time Banking at Cleveland Ripley and the BRIDGE/EL PUENTE
  • 26 Voices of the Neighborhood/Town Hall meetings were attended on average by 47 people
  • 192 persons were registered to vote before the Mayoral election

Direct Services
  • The centers hosted 42 community events and 27 holiday celebrations
  • 118 food fairs were held which each served an average of 394 families
  • 27,566 service connection referrals were made through the centers
  • 949 school uniforms, 921 holiday food baskets, 1,995 holiday toys and 1,338 sets of school supplies were given out to families in need
  • 1,345 individuals were assisted in completing CHIP, Gold Card and other health care related applications
  • The centers gave 3,211 units of emergency food assistance and 2,445 units of emergency utilities assistance
