The most rapid period of brain development occurs between birth and three years of age. Choices in Education, Inc. provides early childhood programs for children during this time that lay the foundation for future learning and help children develop cognitively, emotionally, physically and socially.

Choices in Education programs serving children in this age group are:

Early Head Start

Early Head Start is a federally-funded program that provides early, comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income pregnant women and families with children under age three. The ultimate goal is enhancing children’s competence, which is accomplished by providing high-quality and individualized services for the child and family, strengthening families as primary nurturers of their child and enhancing parent-child relationships.

Our Early Head Start center-based program serves children at two campuses and expectant mothers via a home-based initiative.

At our centers, infants up to age three are cared for in a nurturing, comfortable environment that includes age-appropriate educational, social and health services as well as daily nutritious meals. The centers serve children in 13 different zip codes throughout the west and southwest areas of Harris County. Children attend year-round, four days a week, for six hours each day.

Our home-based program operates in the Gulfton community, serving expectant mothers-to-be and, following birth, their infants. By providing comprehensive Early Head Start services beginning in the prenatal period, low-income children are at lower risk for health and developmental problems. Services include comprehensive prenatal and postpartum health care, prenatal education and breastfeeding education. Prenatal education efforts include information about:

  • Typical fetal development, including the risks of smoking and drinking alcohol
  • What to expect during labor and delivery
  • Nutrition education
  • Postpartum recovery, including maternal depression
Neighborhood Centers Inc. is pleased to partner with Healthy Families Houston to provide home-based services to expectant mothers and their newborns in the Gulfton neighborhood.
