SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start seeks to reduce infant mortality and disparities in healthcare by providing community-based, family-centered prenatal services to women of childbearing age. SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start seeks to improve birth outcomes through case management, health education, and depression screening.
 
The SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start project services ten ZIP codes in the Sunnyside, Third and Fifth Ward communities of Houston. The central program site for this project is at Neighborhood Centers Inc.’s Harbach-Ripley Neighborhood Center.
 

Healthy Start program components include:

  • Information and resources
  • Quitting smoking
  • Breastfeeding
  • Parenting
  • Nutrition
  • Healthy parent-child relationships
  • HIV/AIDS and other STDs
  • Substance Abuse

Health Education and Consortium

  • Free prenatal health classes in one-on-one or group settings
  • Parenting classes
  • Information on maternal and child health
  • Brochures and videos
  • Opportunities to promote healthy pregnancies and babies within your community

Case Management

  • Home visits
  • Medical and social service referrals
  • Depression screening and counseling
  • Incentive program
  • Transportation assistance
  • Follow-up until age two of the child
  • Family planning
  • Bilingual Staff available
