A Brighter Future for Sunnyside, Third Ward and Fifth Ward Infants

Our mission at SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start is to reduce infant mortality and low birth weight babies by educating and training women of child bearing age, teens, fathers, parents, grandparents, local churches, and healthcare professionals. We support the expansion of efforts that are rooted in the community and actively involve community residents by providing family-centered perinatal services to women of childbearing age.

In 1997 Neighborhood Centers Inc. was awarded a planning grant to conduct a needs assessment. In 1998 SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start (SFHS) was funded as one of the smaller Healthy Start Replication sites. SFHS is funded by the Maternal & Child Health Bureau, a bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start provides community based, family centered, comprehensive perinatal services to women, teenagers, infants and their families in the Sunnyside, Third Ward and Fifth Ward districts of Houston, Texas due to these area having the highest incidences of infant mortality.

SFHS primary focus is on:
  • reducing infant mortality,
  • preterm birth and
  • to promote healthy birth outcomes.
This is achieved through:
  • providing outreach,
  • case management and
  • health education on unhealthy risk factors that occur prior to conception and during pregnancy.
SFHS collaborates with local maternal and child health service providers, social/human service agencies, city and state government, private agencies, program participants, and community residents, and others with an interest in working together to address infant mortality and low birth weight in the Houston/Harris County area, in order to enhance Maternal & Child health care coordination and service navigation.
