ACES - Activity Centers for Seniors

Activity Centers for Seniors (ACES) is a popular program that improves participants’ physical fitness – and enhances their overall health – through exercise. ACES is presently offered at 12 locations.

Physical activity is immensely beneficial for the "healthy aging" of elderly persons and can significantly reduce the risk of chronic health conditions, may relieve symptoms of depression, helps to maintain independent living, and enhances overall quality of life. Even among frail and very old adults, mobility and functioning can be improved through physical activity.

Designed specifically for senior adults and based on solid research evidence, ACES includes stretching, flexibility, balance, low-impact aerobics and strength exercises. One-hour classes are conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by a certified fitness instructor who has received specialized training. Classes are paced to safely accommodate individuals at different levels of fitness, and typically convey a relaxed atmosphere with frequent talking and laughter among participants and instructor. Participants follow their progress through functional evaluations made at the time of enrollment and again at four month intervals.

The funding for this program is provided in part by the Administration on Aging, U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. ACES is a licensed program of EnhanceFitness.

Through partnerships with various healthcare providers, seniors receive periodic blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings and Body Mass Index evaluations.
