Infant Mortality Summit
General

9/8/2006

Summit Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

In Texas, and particularly Houston/Harris County, sharp disparities in mortality rates exists. These disparities are related to socioeconomic status, healthcare access, and healthcare quality. Additionally, systemic failings among the nation’s healthcare systems lock millions of American families into perpetual cycles of poor health and limited access.

The Summit will serve to provide a venue designed to bring together the information, collaboration, and community support needed to address infant mortality, its attendant causes, and its unwanted consequences. Interactive workshops, keynote and invited speakers, an open forum, and guided discussions are planned to thoroughly investigate disparities in perinatal health and birth outcomes pertaining to Houston and Harris County.

Projected outcomes from this event are:

  • Increased public awareness surrounding perinatal issues
  • Increased collaboration among social service, healthcare, and other “stakeholder” agencies and organizations
  • Development of community-oriented action teams focused on reducing infant mortality and disparities in healthcare.

This 2nd Annual SFHS Infant Mortality Summit is a collaborative effort of the SUNNY FUTURES Healthy Start Consortium and a coalition of area healthcare, research, and social service providers with a common interest in improving the maternal and child health in the Houston/Harris County area.
