Turning Classrooms into Newsrooms & Students to Reporters
Promise Community School & 713News partner to mentor future media professionals

When it comes to providing quality education to its Promise Community School students, Neighborhood Centers Inc. prides itself in preparing them with real-life experience. That’s why Neighborhood Centers partnered with 713News, a Houston-based bi-lingual English/Spanish online-news site, which is teaching students at the Promise Community School – Ripley House campus the inner workings of broadcast media.

Through its Choices in Education division which oversees the Promise Community Schools, Neighborhood Centers Inc. is the first organization to partner with 713News to provide broadcast-media training in local classrooms, and convert classrooms into newsrooms where students produce news reports that are broadcast on Kidz Newz, the children’s-news portal on 713News.com.

713News reporter/producer Cyndi Garcia and founder/content manager Leo Lazaro hold monthly mentorship meetings and workshops where students learn news-script writing, editing, reporting, audio recording, and video recording. Also, students learn tricks of the trade that Garcia and Lazaro honed in throughout their careers in media.

"The students are learning how to be broadcasters in front of the camera and behind the scenes," Promise Community School – Ripley House campus Principal Karen Elsen says. "The daily newscast helps students with their presentation skills and they learn more about technology."

So far, students have participated in a 713News report that announced the partnership in late October, and were also in a follow-up story that featured the students’ first news production in early November.
