Offering Hope to a Single Mom

Meet Kristy, a young, single mother of two-year-old Rashaad. Like thousands of others, she has been trying to recover from Hurricane Ike for the last nine months. Desperate to find a job in order to pay her bills, Kristy looked first to friends, churches and community centers.

“Work, I just want to work,” Kristy said repeatedly.

Kristy’s determination was unwavering. With no job and no financial means to support herself or her son, she turned to Neighborhood Centers Inc. and its Stay Connected Texas program.

Kristy immediately was assigned to a service connector, Monica Chavez, who helped her develop a plan for recovery and connected her with the resources and services she needed. Gathering information and paperwork for the complex processes seemed like quite a feat for the young mother. Yet even while facing eviction, Kristy never lost her focus or her gratitude.

“No matter what happens, I really appreciate all you have done for me,” Kristy said.

After much perseverance and determination, Kristy found a good job. Although she had to relocate, she also found an affordable apartment near her new job.

Today, Kristy is working full-time and taking care of her son. She continues to stay in touch with her case manager, Monica, as she works through the remaining stages of her recovery plan.

Together, with Neighborhood Centers, Kristy and Rashaad are moving toward a “new normal” and full recovery from Hurricane Ike.

Kristy’s services are funded through the Disaster Housing Assistance Program.
