Neighborhood Centers Inc. has adopted the “asset-based community development” approach to our work in Community Based Initiatives. This model, developed by John Kretzmann and John McKnight at Northwestern University, proposes that individuals and organizations within neighborhoods have assets upon which economic, political and social strength can be built.

We know that significant community development can only take place when local residents are involved – when they are committed to investing themselves and their resources in making their neighborhoods stronger, safer, more vibrant and more inclusive, regardless of background, age or income.

Our approach also recognizes that individuals and communities already possess skills, knowledge and resources that can produce powerful benefits when neighbors are linked with neighbors.

At Neighborhood Centers Inc., community development efforts include these key elements:

Economic Development

The economic power of a community determines its political power and its ability to attract resources that enhance the vitality of the neighborhood. Neighborhood Centers Inc. works to secure partnerships with financial institutions that provide participants greater access to traditional financial services.

We’re also laying the groundwork for economic development programs that identify and assist small business owners/operators, individuals and entrepreneurs in accessing financial services to help them grow their businesses and improve the overall capital of the neighborhood.

Plus, we provide classes and one-on-one support to help residents improve their finances, build credit, train for a career or profession and more.

Citizenship/Immigration Services

Neighborhood Centers Inc. helps new immigrants navigate complex legal and social systems, opening the pathways to citizenship and full participation in the community – all while preserving the beauty and richness of the culture they bring from other countries. We offer classes, support and referrals that enable immigrants to learn English, study for their citizenship test, access needed services and more. Learn more about immigrants and immigration.

Comprehensive Family Health and Education

Because strong families make strong neighborhoods, we offer a vast array of educational and community opportunities for seniors, adults, families and children, including fitness and wellness classes, education and enrichment classes, cultural arts activities and access to social services.

Developing Community Leadership

The ultimate goal of any community development effort is to build the capacity of the community to enhance its own social and economic environment. Neighborhood Centers Inc. provides ongoing support and training for natural and emerging leaders, allowing the community to secure effective representation for individuals and families by connecting its volunteer leadership to institutions and elected officials. Public forums, newsletters and community meetings are tools we use for communication and interaction, assisting community members in building an organized voice.
