U.S. Representative Al Green Visits Cook Road Head Start
Neighborhood Centers was proud to welcome U.S. Representative Al Green to our Cook Road Head Start Center on Monday, April 6. Rep. Green came to see firsthand how the program is making a difference in the lives of low-income children… and their families.
During his visit, Rep. Green read the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” to an attentive classroom full of pre-Kindergarten students. Both he and the children greatly enjoyed the interaction, with the Congressman stressing the importance of trying new things and expanding your horizons – one of the elements of our early childhood education program. After reading to the class, Rep. Green visited a bilingual classroom where he said how impressed he was with the students’ English-language and math skills.
As parents began picking up their children at the end of the school day, the Congressman engaged them in conversation and asked about the effectiveness of the pre-K program. Parents told him how their children were making great strides in learning their numbers and letters, and they praised the full-family support the Head Start program provides in areas such as nutrition and access to other resources.
The Head Start program provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition and parent involvement services to low-income families. Neighborhood Centers serves nearly 2,000 three- and four-year-old children in southwestern Harris County in ten stand-alone centers (such as Cook Road) and 14 collaborative sites with partners such as the Houston Independent School District and private schools.
While our Head Start students enter Kindergarten ready and eager to continue to learn, there are at least 50,000 unserved Head Start-eligible children in Harris County. As he was leaving the center, Rep. Green pledged his support of early childhood educational initiatives to meet the needs of Texas families.
